Guard of the Week- San Dimas High School

this week's Guard of the week is

San Dimas High School

from San Dimas, CA

This team is just as unique as I am. They are continuously always doing better than there last performance just like a team should but, what makes them unique from others, is that they do shows that are sort of out of the box. They like to do shows  that "break the rules of color guard" that are SUPER happy songs and tell stories!

Last year, their show was titled "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend" with the song "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne and placed with the bronze medal in WGSAC. and have been doing there best to keep being successful.

This year they did a really "groovy" number with their "shagadelic" style. The group did a 60s themed Austin Powers show using a 60s version of "Give it Away" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Also This year, they were second place at WGASC Championships which is the highest Champs placement the group has received since 2010 in a lower division, making it their second consecutive medal in a row!!!!!
Overall, they are fighting to bring back that originality to guard and stay pushing the bar of normalcy and continue to be successful.

Congrats Guard of the Week

Kodi is an awesome spinner from Fairland Indiana whos been dedicated to colorguard ever since he started. He spins rifle and Flag for the Triton Central Color Guard, were he loves spinning and doing some of his favorite tosses like 5s on rifle. His favorite thing to do in guard is to perform with his crazy friends and being able to have fun with them which is also the reason why he loves guard. Guard lets everyone be unique and lets people be themselves and at the same time, form bonds with these strangers that you get into guard with.

Guard struggle

Guard is filled with lots of opportunities and chances for everyone to take advantages of but, with those opportunities comes prices to pay. Theses Challenges are the struggles of guard

Having pain all the time

Its not just every practice, its almost every day!!! Practice takes a toll on every guard person like  never before, but we keep on going at because practice makes perfect

wind

EVERY GUARDIE HATES WIND!!! Its either blowing equipment away or messing up your show, in any way or form wind is not a friend of colorguard

learning weapons

Rifle and sabre are really awesome things to learn but, everyone on rifle or sabre knows your either going to get extremely injured, lose your nails, or gain a bruise. If only you could just magically learn the basics of rifle and sabre, maybe it would be easier to get into it.

bruises

I think everyone has that one bruise on there arm, calf, and or foot. This is like tattoos for colorguard, literally almost everyone has one or will get one and it hurts to get them.

never having time

This is what all I all I said in high school and it was true. Practice is great but, you start to realize that regular friends are over rated and guard is sometimes all you need.

Guard of The Week- Thomas Worthington High School

This week's guard of the week is...

image4.JPG

Thomas Worthington High Schools

From Worthington, Ohio

Thomas Worthington is and average size guard from Ohio but, don't let the size judge there hard work. The team has gotten OMEA Superior rating(fall guard) and MEPA State finalist (winter guard).
image7.JPG
The winterguard this season only had 5 people (smallest group in their class) consisting of 3 freshman, 1 sophomore and 1 junior, but that didn't stop them. This year they also place 6/16 at states, that goes to show you that even with having a small guard, you can still achieve a lot.
image5.JPG
For marching band, they had exactly 200 people including guard and for the past 23 years we have qualified for states and have consecutively gotten a superior at states for the past 12 years. Together, this team shows the non-stop endurance, capability to accomplish everything, and kick-butt attitude whenever they step out on the field or the floor in competition

Prince

I usually don't double post but, this is a different occasion. This morning I woke up, did my usual thing to keep my hygiene up and feed my grandfather something to eat. Its was not till after I was getting everything ready for the day I felt deep despair. This morning I went on TMZ and saw That Music Legend himself, Prince, died at 57.

It was devastating because being a 90s baby, I grew up watching his iconic style, his personal flare, the soulful Funk, and his hydrogenous edge that he had to him. He Taught people to be in there own skin and be who they want to be.

Whether he played one of his dramatic ballads, edgy funk songs, or rock out with his guitar, you knew who Prince was and what he sounded like. This man fueled a generation of music lovers and inspired artist like Miguel, Maxwell, and many more people of today's age. Today I wanted to acknowledge the impact he had in colorguard with the iconic show from light brigade that was inspired and dedicated to the legend himself, Prince. We love you Prince and your unique ways and will always love you.

Music for guard

The other day, I was thinking about music for colorguard and realize, we usually stay in the same poetic, sad, and romance genres like lyrical, contemporary, and modern music. To me personally......

Its Boring.

I like to see some variety of music and styles of shows, not the typical show that most people think will win but, it will not. So, these are some genres that I realize not that are not really being used in guard but, definitely should be given a little look at.

  • Dancehall

A popular yet, still undiscovered genre based on Rastafari or Jamaican music. Some big known artist like Spice, Koshens, Vybz Kartel, Suku, and more including Djs like Tropkillaz, Ape Drums, Major Lazer, and Diplo have used this genre. I have never seen a guard that has done Dancehall, this would be a unique type of style to do and  I can't wait to see one.
  • Alternative R&B

This genre, unlike its originator (R&B), has more of a deep Dark sorrow but stills tells a love story. Some artist are very provocative like PARTYNEXTDOOR, some are more artistic like Fka Twigs, And some are more Pop like Mapei. This Genre you will get what you Typically wanted but, in different way, its like getting your cake and eating it too.
  • Balle Funk

Balle Funk derives from Rio Grande Music and Started out in the favelas(Ghettos) Of Sao Paulo. Its Uses the same beat in every song but, every song is simply unique in its own way. Most of the songs talk about poverty and the grit of the favelas but in a way to rise above it. This genre music has a fun, funky vibe  with a revolutionary message to stir the masses
  •  Alternative Indie/ Deep Dark Indie

This genre takes the typical modern genre feels and mixes it with the deathly sound of gothic music without the potentially scream-o vibe. this genre makes great guard music because it gives that dark emotional performance every guardie lives for.
  • Afro Beat

Afro Beat derives from West Africa and created with the western modernization styles and old Africa cultured music. This style is heard across the Caribbean, Africa, and Americas but, only in the parts were there are mostly base with Africans. This genre alone is rising rapidly and continuously keeps rising across the Charts.
  • Classic Soul

The originators of modern funk, hip hop and other genres, Soul brought many artist into its upbeat sounds and retro beats which really got America  into artist like Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald This genre sparked thousands of people integrating and listening to more of live soul music every day
  • Classical orchestra

Image result for orchestra spotify

One of the oldest genres of all time, Orchestra or classical symphony music has been around since the time of Bach, Shakespeare, and Beethoven. The sound itself is heard to help focus the brain and raise intelligence levels up in infants and minors, there have been rare occasions in guard where groups used classical music to spin to and perform to.
  • UK garage synthpop

Image result for garage house spotify

UK garage is simply and modern, grungy version of  house music. Inspired by discotheque of the 2000s, this genre displays a an elite yet, old school and funky way into music , With artist like Disclosure, UK Garage is becoming very popular would play a great with guard.
  • alternative dance

Image result for EDM spotify

Alternative dance is just like alternative indie, but with  more upbeat music and vibe. Its mostly EDM with a certain twist, it gives you that feel of excitement but also, keeps you into the show. This genre is definitely what a lot of people would want to listen to when watching a guard show.
  • Theatre

Image result for theatre spotify

Theatre takes live vocals and pare them with an assortment of instruments and gives dramatic powerful ballads to the music that is being played. Most songs from this genre goes with certain plays or musicals that are new or been around for ages. This genre is a go to genre for most colorguards because of its dramatization.
