West Ranch Guard is a newly rising California guard with powerful technical skills. They have been on a good winning streak for this year's winterguard season, winning gold medal in their division ,Scholastic AA, in the WGASC circuit. As well as wining first place, the guard has a determine, kick-butt attitude ready for every competition they do and is ready to take the WGI stage in 2017.
Four preliminary rounds of competition were held in Orange County to determine which color guard units would go on to compete in the championships. The West Ranch Color Guard won the top score in its division.
“I think for the color guard, that their ultimate goal is to perform to the best of their ability,” said Jason A. Marshall, the director of instrumental music at West Ranch High School, said.
The top three teams per division, per round, plus the top three overall scores per division from the preliminary rounds went on to compete at the championships, which were held at the University of California Irvine.
The West Ranch team was among 15 teams competing for the top honor at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California Championships. There the team once again received the highest score and they won, Marshall said.
“They were ecstatic, they were very emotional, they were very thrilled and very proud of what they have done,” Coach Esther Kamp said.
Marshall said he has overseen the color guard at West Ranch High School for 11 years. He said he praised Kamp for her hard work.
“She has been here from the beginning,” he said. “This is her 11th year as well.”
“I think this team had a greater sense of camaraderie than other teams that I’ve coached. They always seem to be there for each other,” Kamp said.
“There was not any member that was outside of the group. They all got along really well.
